The final display of flowers arranged by Wendy Davis was magnificent and each individual "celebration" comprised 2 designs for the raffle so 10 people won prizes.
Wendy is from North Wales and a member of Llangollen Flower Club. She has been chairman of her region and also National Chairman. Much of her subject was based on her experiences in that role.
Her 1st design was inspired by the gold barge on the Thames, in cold and rain, and was her tribute to the Queen and Royal Family. Another design represented N.A.F.A.S. and depicted a flower festival in Westminster Abbey entitled Rejoice.Wendy worked in the Abbey on a 2nd occasion for the Royal Wedding. Her biggest problem was keeping this honour a secret from friends and family.
She told us of the hornbeam and maple trees which we saw on T.V. but what we couldn't see well were the lily of the valley below which came from Royal households. No floral foam was used in any of country type designs.
A miniature Penny- Farthing bicycle was decorated and she talked of a local treasure, Erddig Hall near Wrexham where the last owner, of the now N.T. house, cycled to church.
Her final, large and colourful design celebrated the Olympics.
Throughout her work she used flowers and shrubs which blossom in May,laburnum, wisteria, white lilac, ceonothus and aquilegia which was lovely to see.
Next month, on 11th June, we visit a private garden in Manley. If you wish to come along be at the Community Centre car park for 6-50pm ready to depart at 7pm prompt.Lifts are being arranged so it would help to contact 01829 740855. The cost of garden tour and refreshments is £6-50.
Our A.G.M. meeting on July 9th should be of interest to visitors. At approximately 8pm after the A.G.M. we are to have a talk on Wade miniatures which includes the history and examples. Refreshments are included in the £5 visitor charge.
