The Community Centre hall looked attractive with the beautifully arranged stalls around the walls. These were selling Christmas cakes and puddings, marmalade and chutney as well as ribbons, accessories, soft toys and wonderful Christmas gifts. We enjoyed a celebratory glass of mulled wine as we arrived.
Our demonstrator was Kathleen Williams, originally from Manchester and now settled in Oldham. She had a typical Lancashire sense of humour and timing when recounting reminiscences of her life and she kept us very amused throughout.
Her designs weren't full of glitz and glitter but were all attractive and related to Christmas with some ideas for gifts that we could copy. Her 1st design represented Christmas cards and was backed by a post-box. Stories of working on the Christmas post during student days were familiar to many of us – although I personally don't recall it being so funny at the time!
One design was called Starburst containing only gerbera with aspidistra leaves.
Kathleen had been married at Christmas and it snowed, causing the usual problems that snow brings in this country. In later years they had various anniversary holidays in places where it often snows but wherever they went it never snowed. One year they resorted to artificial snow at Paris Disneyland and took their family.
The final design represented the Alps and looked stunning in all white .
The raffle followed and then Christmas refreshments (1st mince pie of the season for many)
At the next meeting on January 10th 2018, Dorothy Monks will demonstrate with the title "Inspiration is All Around us". Hope we'll see many members and visitors at 7-30 in the Edna Rose room of Tarvin Community Centre.
