Recently, three members of the Community Centre Committee undertook some basic Food Hygiene training to ensure that they have the required level of skills to ensure that the kitchen and its equipment meet an acceptable standard. All were awarded certificates of competence.

Chairman Alan Wilkinson said "While it is rare for food to be prepared from scratch in our kitchen, we do want to ensure that the latest standards that are applicable are applied. To achieve this, certain improvement will be undertaken in the next few weeks"

The most obvious change will be the installation of a sink specifically for hand-washing use. This will be placed close to the dishwasher. The work will also allow for the dishwasher to be plumbed into the hot water, rather than the cold-water supply making the use of the dishwasher much easier. The Committee also intend to install an Insect-o-Cutor to eliminate flying insect pests and to supply some colour coded chopping boards. When the work is completed the kitchen will be subject to a deep clean.

These changes are also part of the Community Centre's push to obtain a Hallmark Level 2 accreditation. This scheme, run by Action for Communities in Rural England (ACRE), helps volunteers run their centres well, and gives users confidence that proper systems are in place for their well-being.

Alan says "The Community Centre is now in use seven days a week and by multiple users at the same time. Even though the Committee are volunteers, we want to try and maintain the highest standards we can so that the village will continue to benefit from, and have confidence in, this great local resource"
