In all publicity, consistency is a must. Brand names and images are guarded with vigour and mistakes can cause problem.

So the Marketing team at the Community Centre were somewhat concerned to receive two posters from the Theatre company bringing the Panto on December 2nd. The first one clearly said 'Dwarves' while the second firmly declared that Snow White is accompanied by Seven Dwarfs.

To be precise, the plural of dwarf is dwarfs. However, eighty years ago, J R R Tolkien coined the word Dwarves as a literary device to describe his characters as "descendants of the Naugrim of the Elder Days" and the adaptation has stuck. There is also an informal usage of the latter spelling if talking about small people in fantasy situations.

Sue Hardacre explains "When I started publicising the Panto I checked the poster I had been sent and copied the 'dwarves' ending. However, it seems the company has had a change of heart and is now following the more correct form, The spelling "dwarfs" was also used by Disney in the 1937 film version so loved by so many. There is evidence to suggest that Tolkien wished to make a noticeable difference between his noble characters and the cute cartoon seven"

Whatever the spelling no doubt the familiar story will unfold in the Community Centre on Saturday December 2nd at 3.00 pm. Doors will be open from 2.30 pm and a large audience is expected. Tickets are £6 for adults and £4 for children and can be obtained from the Post Office or from www.ticketsource.co.uk/tarvincommunitycentre They are selling steadily already, so don't leave your purchase too late.
