Every Society needs to have a meeting during the year at which members can make sure that things are being run correctly, that their money is well-looked-after and that there are a sufficient number of people willing to do the work necessary to keep the Society going for the next twelve months.

While such meetings are never anyone's first choice of how to spend time, it is important that they do take place. However, it could be that the long-suffering people who sit through such meetings deserve a reward – a treat. That was the plan when the speaker for this month's Gardening Society meeting was chosen.

When all the 'important' business has been dealt with, we are to hear a superbly illustrated talk on the "History & Wildlife of Pembrokeshire", given by David Cummings. David is well-known for his fascinating, well-researched talks (complete with a selection of his remarkable collection of slides); talks which range from history through geography to natural science (and frequently including all three!)
This talk will take us along the Pembrokeshire Coast path, visiting beaches, rock pools, flower-rich cliffs and offshore islands like Grassholm and Skomer. We will meet puffins, shearwaters, gannets and a variety of sea birds, as well as a number of species of dolphins. There is also a visit to the Cathedral at St David's. During the talk, David will survey for us the history of the area, from the time of prehistoric man through to the Tudors.

It is a tremendous gift when a speaker is able to bring his talk alive in the minds of his audience. David Cummings has such a gift and his commentary, fed by his prodigious memory, is able to cope with audience questions and detours, bringing them seamlessly into the fabric of the talk.
If you know Pembrokeshire, this is the ideal opportunity of being reacquainted – and if it's a place to which you have never been, this talk will surely spark your enthusiasm to visit this jewel of a county at the very edge of Wales. Either way, this is a talk not to be missed!
