Tarvin Horticultural Show, to be held on Saturday August 15th 2015 at Tarvin Community Centre, is a high-point in the village calendar. Open to members and non-members alike, it provides gardeners, whatever their level of expertise, with the opportunity to show off the flowers, fruit and vegetables that they have grown. With classes that enable flower arrangers, cooks and school children, as well as the gardeners, to display their talents, there will be plenty of friendly competition and, with thirty one cups and trophies to be awarded for the various classes, there is plenty of chance for a good number of your own exhibits to shine!

Afternoon tea will be served for a modest charge and, with the viewing of the exhibits (which begins from 2.00pm) and the presentation of the trophies (at 3.30pm), will combine to produce a great social event for the village.

Exhibits are staged between 8.00am and 11.00am on the morning of the show. There will be twenty four classes for flowers – from chrysanthemums to cacti – with a further two for baskets and containers (plus a special class for society members only), five classes for fruit (with another one for rhubarb – the fruit that isn't!) and twenty six classes for vegetables, ranging from peas to chilli peppers. Flower arrangers have eight classes to choose from, there are five classes for children and a further ten classes for bakers and jam-makers! All entries are free. Winners will receive certificates, while, additionally, children will receive a small cash prize.

Schedules are readily available from the Show Secretaries, Errol & Christine Slatcher, 7, Hunters Drive, Tarvin, Chester, CH3 8EX (phone 01829 741389) and also from Tarvin Post Office. Completed entry forms must be received by the Secretaries before 5.00pm on Friday August 14th – the evening before the show.

Every year, there are villagers who are amazed at how well their exhibits have fared against the others and it is not unknown for cups to go home in the hands of gardeners who consider themselves utter novices. It really is worth having a go – and the whole thing is so much fun!

Put the date in your diary – Saturday August 15th 2015 – and GET GROWING!
