Ashton Hayes & Tarvin Flower Club's September meeting was an event to celebrate 40 years of the club which started in Ashton but moved to Tarvin after the community centre opened. Much planning went into this event, especially by Merryn, our chairman who even grew ruby coloured dahlias for the table centre vases.

Members from the past were invited and we had 4 original members including 3 who have remained members for 40 years!

The hall looked good with the round tables having ruby coloured cloths and ruby table centres. At each place was the gift of a jar of Walnut and Damson jam, made by Merryn.

Members, guests and committee took their places to be served with a glass of fizz. There was a silence for our late Queen before the stands of food for afternoon tea were put out. These included 4 types of sandwich, sausage rolls, scones and 7 different types of cake. What a spread – hand produced entirely by Merryn and Elizabeth. They had both worked so hard.

Our demonstrator for the evening, Anne Houghton, followed with "All kinds of everything" She produced 6 colourful designs which looked stunning with the black background of the stage. Anne incorporated red flowers and foliage and spoke of events of 1982 to be topical for the evening.

Design 1 was called "I don't go to Ikea". She used hostas and fatsia with red gerbera and green Bells of Ireland in a fan shaped design on a 3 part stand from Ikea. For the 2nd design , "Psychology of Colour" Anne used a multi coloured cylindrical vase and introduced all the colours with her flowers. "A Cottage Garden" was depicted in the 3rd arrangement. Designed on a flat tray with ferns for foliage, purple stocks and pink roses. Design 4 was on a tall, silver sprayed piece of driftwood which looked like a swan about to fly so Anne used palm leaves as wings with white chrysanthemums and calla lilies to emphasise the look. "A Bronze Relic" was a 2 part design with garden foliage, teazles, purple liatris, mauve gladioli white stocks and red gerbera. Like all flower arrangers , demonstrators are trying to stop using floral foam so the final design was called "Eco Friendly" it was arranged in a hat box using chicken wire. This was a large flowing design with palm leaves and garden foliage. The flowers werewhite chrysanthemums and white stocks with red asters.

Sharon, our President, gave the vote of thanks which was followed by more food! Merryn cut the celebratory cake which she had made, photographs and raffle followed before we ate our cake with a coffee/tea. A wonderful evening for all who were present.

Our October meeting is on October 12th at 7-30pm in the Community Centre main hall. There will be a Christmas sales table and the demonstration "A Walk In the Park" will be by Anne Russell. Visitors are welcome to join us.
