A recent report in a national newspaper revealed that animated films have replaced action movies as the country's most favourite film type.

At the box office, Frozen, Monster University and The Croods all appeared in the top ten, and the payments made by the Community Centre for all these films will have made a – very small – contribution!
It seems that only 33 animated films were released last year and they generated £247m at the box office, up £100m on the year before.

The reason given is that the improving quality of the films means that adults are happy to come and see them, and not just in the company of younger children. Oliver Hyatt, Chairman of Animation UK said "Part of the recent success of animated films is that they are becoming more sophisticated and appealing to a broader audience". Action films are certainly still an important genre, but family orientated films, many of which are now being made in the UK, are filling an increasing sector of the market.

The Community Centre is delighted that its decision to start showing films has been so successful, and it looks forward to another great season starting at the end of September. Let's hope there are another great 33 titles to choose from. The choice of the grown-up film is a bit more of a challenge, but the committee is confident that it can continue to support this lively international industry.
