'Phishing' is when criminals use scam emails, text messages or phone calls to trick their victims. The aim is often to make you visit a website, which may download a virus onto your computer, or steal login credentials or other personal information.
We are currently seeing a new variation Phishing email that uses a QR code rather than the usual link or attachment to trick you into providing your login credentials. A Quick Response (QR) code is a two-dimensional barcode that stores data, often website links or information, that is readable by smartphones.
How do I identify this new type of Phishing email?
The Phishing email will have text encouraging you to scan the QR code. The example in the image appears to be from Microsoft but is a Phishing attempt. Click on the image to enlarge.
