On Tuesday evening, the 25th March, the Edna Rose room at The Community Centre was packed to the rafters as members and visitors gathered for the Civic Trust AGM followed by a talk on "History of Wirral's Maritime Coast" by Gavin Hunter.

This was a very interesting and informative talk following the Wirral's east coast from the mouth of the Mersey to the start of the Manchester Ship canal, enhanced with a great collection of photographs, both early and up-to-date, and the Speaker's natural keen sense of humour and incredible knowledge of the area.

Who would have known that New Brighton was THE destination in the late Victorian period when it had several firsts including a Tower taller than Blackpool and the largest open-air swimming pool in the world that could accommodate 2000 swimmers!

Gavin included a detailed history of all the various ferry services that plied their trade across the Mersey, how many jetties were lost due to collisions with shipping, how vital shipping was for Industry, and how important they were to the economic success of the Wirral.

Richard Chaplin said" It was a real treat to see Mr Hunter's collection of photographs and pictures. If you get the opportunity to see them for yourself – grab it."

This was the final talk of this seasons' Tarvin Civic Trust and the new programme will be published in time for when they resume in October.
