From the Tarvin Woodland Community Trust ...
When, in 2022, the Trust held the annual Apple Pressing event in Tarvin woodland, there were present two volunteers from The Joshua Tree, a charity which is based near Sandiway. They enjoyed the day so much that they asked if it would be possible to take all our gear over to their HQ on Dalefords Lane and spend time with some of the children (and their families) who benefit from their care.
The charity exists to offer guidance and relief to the families of youngsters who are suffering from cancer; are being treated, are in remission or have hopefully overcome the disease. The organisation is entirely voluntary. At short notice, we did as requested and four Trust members plus all our gear attended for an afternoon. The experience was truly wonderful and brought smiles and laughter to so many affected by this disease.
Both parties involved clearly enjoyed the experience so much that we have just done it again! Last Tuesday, ten members travelled in three cars laden with gear, presses, crushers and, of course, many buckets of apples. This year, there was a marquee and dozens of children of all ages, along with Mums, Dads, grandparents and carers, took part in making their own apple juice – just as happens in Tarvin.
There were games to play and tractor rides to enjoy, and a spirit of enjoyment, happiness and laughter was easy to see for some hours. One could simply meander into their Sensory Garden, a place of peace and quiet, and reflect for a few moments. The Cornish pasties, sausage rolls, and chocolate doughnuts were well worth the visit, as was the never-ending supply of coffee.
To bring a smile to a child's face as they see their own apples being chopped, crushed, pressed and bottled, is something no money can buy. They watch, learn, communicate and enjoy taking a short break from the pressures of their affliction. It is all so very worthwhile!
Until next year then, when we hope to be invited once more!
