October Meeting Report
There was a good atmosphere in the full Edna Rose room for this meeting. We welcomed back Kathleen Williams who had been here before 2020. Her subject was "Lets Celebrate". Her designs were mainly in single colours which gave a wonderful show at the end.
Design 1 on a stand showing a large card was to celebrate birthdays. She used purple shades only and the liatris, gerbera and carnations were shown to shoot out from the card.
Yellow was the colour for her no foam arrangement. Yellow roses and spray chrysanthemums were placed in many small jars on a beautiful slice of wood. The large rabbit with a carrot showed us it was for Easter.
Iridescent shredded paper in a glass vase looked attractive for a wedding which was Kathleen's next celebration. She used eucalyptus with purple veronica and old fashioned pink toned roses for a cascading design which looked very sophisticated.
Kathleen's family in Manchester have supported City through all its ups and downs for years so sport had to be celebrated. A Manchester City scarf lay alongside the finished arrangement. This was a parallel design of white stocks, pale blue delphiniums and white carnations.
Seasons of the year was shown with an Autumn design in a traditional bronze urn. She used died oak leaves, hypericum berries and orange gerbera to great effect.
Her final display celebrated Christmas and wedding anniversaries as she was married 4 days before Christmas. She used a tall black stand with placements at top and bottom to give a spectacular final design in silver and white.
Whilst Kathleen was demonstrating she talked the whole time, she had a fantastic Lancashire sense of humour and made every story into a comic situation. We laughed throughout with her stories of demonstrations in the Isle of Man and Spain with 5 hour delays because of strong gales, travel sickness, parrot in a cage etc. She told us of her Grandson who is studying at university in U.S.A.. He has a sport's scholarship and does some commentating which they can sometimes pick up. They would love to visit but Kathleen's husband has a fear of flights so the only method of transport she has found is a container ship from Amsterdam to Boston which takes 6 weeks in each direction with little luxury! I could go on forever but it would not give any indication of her joyous sense of humour.
We all enjoyed the homemade cake with our tea/coffee and looked enviously at the members who were collecting the lovely flowers as raffle prizes.
November 13th is a date to add to diaries as we will have our Christmas extravaganza at 7-30pm in the main hall. There will be stalls to browse and buy from and raffles for flowers and a hamper. Buck's fizz will be provided on entry and seasonal refreshments at the end. Full details will be given nearer the time.
