Ashton Hayes and Tarvin Flower Club
September Meeting
Becca Morris our demonstrator on Wednesday promised to take us Around the World and she certainly did with 6 designs using fabulous foliage and flowers much of which was from her own and her mother's gardens. Each traditional styled design was packed with blooms. The hydrangeas in particular were marvellous and in many colours. The success of this shrub is one slight advantage to all the rain we have had to endure. Becca's garden is on top of a Welsh hillside so her plants have to withstand harsh conditions. Becca only passed her test last year but is a trained florist. During her younger days she was a keen member of Young Farmers and was lucky to be chosen to take part in some holiday's they organised.
The 1st place represented in flowers was Britain and gardens. Her design in a large bowl was placed in chicken wire and could be viewed all round. Lots of garden foliage complemented the beautiful deep pink hydrangeas and purple dahlias along with some roses and alstomeria.
Her next arrangement took us to Latvia where she visited as a Young Farmer. The parallel design in red and white roses represents the Latvian flag. She liked the country and said it was a good place to visit.
Spain, followed where she and her husband arrived just following a storm so there were some electrical problems but they managed to see plenty of the country. Her design was in shades of pink and white lilies and stocks with much foliage. She displayed her flowers with dancing shoes and fans.
With a cowboy hat on her head Becca told us of her very interesting 3 week trip to America. Here the Young Farmers stayed with 3 different host families and learned much of the life in an area near Chicago. At High school the young people are taught lessons in Hunting. The flowers were the colours of the US flag with blue shown with more hydrangeas. Cowboy boots were placed by the finished design.
Yellow roses with red foliage and other flowers displayed in a large urn reminded her of her honeymoon spent in Italy. A lovely all round arrangement.
Finally we had a large floor standing design in bright colours or red, yellow andorange decorated with African masks and with 2 metal giraffes standing by. This was a very eye catching finale and showed us the place she wants to visit.
The lucky raffle winners were pleased with their wins. Homemade refreshments were served with tea/coffee and we thoroughly enjoyed the evening visits to interesting places.
On October 9th Kathleen Williams will demonstrate with the title Let's Celebrate. She has visited before and was very amusing.
