At this time of the year 26 years ago, three radio amateurs helped save a boy's life in a mountain SOS drama. The three-man team, Chester resident Anthony Lewis, Tarvin man Graham Pemberton and Peter Baston of Penyffordd, were on a hike trip along the picturesque Leete Walk near Loggerheads, Mold when their attention was call to the plight of a 12 year old boy who had fallen 50 feet down a bank into the River Alyn.

The three men, all members of the voluntary emergency communication network, RAYNET, had their radio equipment with them and their SOS call was picked up by radio ham Brian Lancaster of Tarporley who then rang 999. The boy had pulled himself out of the water but had been shivering on the riverbank for about an hour. Mr Pemberton, a St John Ambulance official, and Mr Baston supplied warm clothing to the boy as the trio waited for the Clywd Mountain Rescue team to arrive. A paramedic from the ambulance service was airlifted to the scene by police helicopter and after further treatment for leg injuries and hypothermia at Wexham Maelor Hospital, the boy was later allowed home.
