Tarporley and District u3a Next Meeting
Thursday 26 September 2024 -The Chester Town Crier
Our speaker this month is David Mitchell Town Crier for Chester.
Chester is the only place in Britain to maintain the tradition of proclamations from a fixed spot:
David's tolling bell and loud ringing tones announce events in and around Chester city and also important events across the nation. He can be clearly heard from his Crier's spot; 'The High Cross' along Eastgate, Northgate, Watergate and Bridge Street.
David will be telling us about the history of Chester's Town Crier and the elaborate uniform.
He will in his presentation cover the predictable and some more unusual proclamations he has made including reminders about local by-laws and other important and useful information and the bizarre situations he has found himself in with tourists, and his horse!
