From Charles Bradley, Tarvin Community Woodland Trust ....

Do you have surplus apples?

You will be aware that the first Saturday in October is Tarvin Apple Pressing Day. This year, that is Saturday, 5th October 2024. Families come along to Tarvin woodland, in the section behind Crossfields, where we have our Community Orchard. There they can have a low-cost family day out, with the youngsters making their own apple juice, without ever having to leave the village! It is great fun and, above all, the expression on a child's face when they drink apple juice that they have just produced from the apples is absolutely priceless!

The greatest risk of the day is that we don't get sufficient apples to keep us going for the full time and enable everyone to get the experience. That is why we are making this appeal to the whole of the village and the local community, whether they can come to the apple pressing or not.

Do you have apples that you could spare for us? Please don't think we want your best ones – they don't have to be of wonderful quality and windfalls work very well indeed. If you can spare some, then please do let us know – our track record is that, during the day, we go through a tremendous quantity of apples and so it is unlikely that we will have too many. If you let me know, then we can arrange for the Woodland Volunteers to call round towards the end of next week (at a time which we can agree with you) and collect them.

Each year, we see apple trees around the village with a huge number of unwanted apples carpeting the grass beneath them. Of course, it is true that they won't be completely wasted, because the birds will make good use of them, but there will probably be enough for both the birds to eat AND for some of Tarvin's young people to get fun out of pressing juice out of them!

Please do get in touch if you have spare apples. A call to me (Charles Bradley) on Tarvin (01829) 741172 will be sufficient to get the ball rolling. If we're not at home, please leave a message (including your phone number, so that I can call you back) on the answerphone. And, having done that, you can rest assured that you will be brightening the day for some of Tarvin's young people.

Thank you very much.
