Once again, Autumn brings another Apple Pressing!

For years, the changing season from summer to autumn has been marked in both Tarvin churches and in Tarvin School by the ever-popular Harvest Festivals – a celebration of our gratitude for what the Earth and its' creator have provided for us. In the last few years, though, another celebration has been held: a celebration of the local apple crop and of our ability to produce apple juice from them, rather than from supermarkets!

This Saturday, 6th October 2018, will see the fourth of our Apple Pressing Day in Tarvin's own Woodland. Held in the section of woodland behind Crossfields from 11.00am to 3.00pm, the day is intended as a fun day out for Tarvin folk and their families, without the need to travel far or to spend much money. There will be apples to press, fresh apple juice to drink, crafts for the youngsters, hot and cold drinks and, of course, Wally Dutton's beef burgers and hot dogs for lunch.

The weather forecast may not look too promising but, as we demonstrated in 2016 (when we spent almost all of the time in steady rain), the event will certainly go on. Indeed, the attendance was only slightly lower that year than it had been in dryer circumstances and everyone who came said what a good time they had had. Perhaps this is an example of the saying that there is no such thing as bad weather: only inappropriate clothing!

So, if you have windfall apples – or apples still on the tree that you don't wish to put into store for later use – find a bag, or a bucket, or a wheelbarrow and bring them along to the woodland on Saturday, to turn them into wonderfully refreshing apple juice. If you were to bring along a plastic bottle, you could take some home with you to enjoy on Saturday evening. What a marvellous way to spend your Saturday and to entertain the whole family – without it costing the earth or breaking the bank!
