Despite some clashing events in the village our turnout for a very well- known and excellent demonstrator was good. Keith Smithies is from Colwyn Bay and despite being near the sea and having a windy garden it is south facing and obviously grows shrubs and plants really well. Or perhaps it is his green fingers. He explained that his title "Advent to Autumn" was to display his ideas for his favourite season and also give ideas that can be taken through to Christmas.

It was his choice of colour combinations and selection of flower types that made this demonstration stand out from the norm. His 1st design in a basket with birch rings combined Purple liatris and chrysanthemums with orange carnations and gerbera. Stunning.

A design put together on the floor came next. He used a large piece of driftwood as background with deep blue delphiniums, home grown alliums with a light spray, mini red gerbera, purple and white carnations and some cream calla lilies with a purple centre which were unusual and gorgeous.

A portable stand containing a hanging basket followed which was all white and green. Keith used amaranthus ,green chrysanthemums white antirrhinums and lilies.

Two bamboo lanterns into which battery candles were inserted provided bases for designs containing cape gooseberries, yellow roses and a spider chrysanthemum called "Safina" which was a glorious combination of green ,yellow and chestnut brown.

A floor design followed which consisted of a green frame on a screen. On this Keith put 2 designs which included white dendrobium orchids along with white and mauve roses.

The final design is shown with a delighted raffle winner. It was large and contained 3 big palm leaves red gerbera and gladioli with a yellow-gold cymbidium orchid for a wow factor.

It is 19 years since Keith visited our club and we sincerely hope to see him again but sooner next time. A great evening which we all thoroughly enjoyed.

November 14th is a date for your diary. That will be our Christmas demonstration with festive refreshments and several Christmas related stalls plus tombola and of course a raffle of the wonderful designs. Jane Pughe, who we have greatly enjoyed before will give us her ideas of "Christmas Cheer"
