National Year of Reading 2026

Libraries across Cheshire West and Chester are joining the National Year of Reading 2026.

Throughout the year, libraries will celebrate monthly themes including World Book Day, well-being, volunteering, story sessions for the under 5s and the Summer Reading Challenge.

Joining a public library is quick, free and requires no ID. Members can enjoy free books, digital resources,WIFI, computer access, social activities and even borrow an iPad.

Nuns Road, Chester: Re-paving works in progress

Paving along Nuns Road in Chester will be lifted and re laid from Monday 19 January 2026 for around 12 weeks, requiring a full road closure. Dates may change depending on weather.

The paving beside the City Walls has been damaged by tree roots. The Council s Highways Service will reuse existing paving where possible, reset tree pit edges and install a flexible resin surface to prevent future damage.

New Living Roof Bus Shelters for West Cheshire

Up to ten new Living Roof bus shelters are being introduced across West Cheshire as part of a bus stop maintenance programme.

These low-maintenance roofs use a mix of native wildflowers and sedum (flowering leaf succulents), helping boost biodiversity, support pollinators and bring more greenery to local high streets. Several shelters will also feature solar panels to power internal lighting.
