Have you ever done the Couch to 5K challenge? Is it something you'd like to do? On September 17th in Tarvin Woodland, we have the perfect opportunity for those who would like to try the NHS Couch to 5K running challenge.

This NHS gradual buildup running program, helps absolute beginners or those who have not run for a long time to gradually work up to running 5 km in just nine weeks. With the Tarvin Woodland run on the 17th September, this is the perfect goal for Tarvin residents to look forward to for their Couch to 5k Program.

The inventor, Josh Clark, developed the Couch to 5k program to help his Mum to get running in her 50's. The program involves three runs per week with rest days and a different schedule each week over nine weeks. The first week schedule involves running for just one minute at a time, making the challenge feel achievable and realistic right from the start. The program works because it gradually builds up your stamina and fitness meaning you won't overdo it and give up in the first week or two.

Running is a low-cost and easy way of improving cardiovascular health. and can also help you lose weight (as long as you don't reward yourself with a big slice of cake for every run!) There is even evidence it could increase bone density. People who take up running often report improved mental health too. The Couch to 5K challenge can help boost your confidence and self-esteem as you set yourself targets and achieve goals. Studies have shown that running helps to alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression. I find it a morning run makes me perform better at work and a run in the evening helps me to wind down after a stressful day.

You don't need expensive equipment to run, although a decent pair of running shoes that suit your foot and stride type may help improve comfort while running and reduce injuries. Whether you've never run before or you just want to get fit again, it is a low cost and gentle way of getting fitter and healthier.
