Motorists who allow rubbish to be thrown from their cars could be prosecuted so reported the Sunday Telegraph

The Government is looking at making it easier for councils to fine those who throw litter from cars, cutting down on roadside rubbish which costs millions of pounds to clean up.

Keep Britain Tidy estimates that 30million tons are dropped every year, costing tax payers £1 billion to clear up.

Currently enforcement officers can only fine people if they can prove who threw the rubbish out of the car, van or lorry. New powers passed by Parliament this year allows officials to fine the registered keepers of vehicles from which littering occurs.

Ed:"If you drive along the A54 or A51 you will see litter in the hedges and grass verges most of which has been thrown from vehicles who's owners have enjoyed the latest coffee treat or burgers/sandwiches from businesses obviously located in our area

.

What can we do about it?

1. Tarvin residents through local taxes have to pay for CWaC to clear that rubbish from our highways, so it is appropriate that the "offenders" be charged and made to pay for the clean-up through fines (passed onto the Council responsible) and penalty points?.

2. Why not tackle the cost at source and impose a 5p "tax" on every purchase of food/drink (and plastic bags) bought as a take-away and get the taxes raised paid into the relevant Council Authority to pay for the clear up?

3. Do you want Tarvinonline to start a campaign to get CWaC to take an active stance on littering by motorists and to use these new laws to recoup the costs?
