Last week, one of our founding editors, Arnie Sheppard, resigned. Arnie has been a stalwart of Tarvin Online and without his and Brian Hardacre's invaluable contribution and hard work, it would not be the asset to the village that it is.

However, it leaves one 'full-time' editor, Brian and one 'part-time' editor, Fiona Miles, to run the site.
Without another person stepping forward to assist in the maintenance of the website, Tarvin Online runs a serious risk of stopping publication.

Brian explains "I have been on the editorial team since the beginning and enjoy the work. Fiona has become more involved since the beginning of the year, but recently started a full-time job and can give only limited time. The work is neither hard or particularly time-consuming, but there needs to be at least two, and preferably three, people prepared to manage the site, to select the stories to be published, to check them and any images provided and upload them. The technology is straightforward but, like all tech systems, can sometimes be a bit frustrating. Even with Fiona's help, I cannot run the site without someone willing to assist me. If no one is forthcoming, the site will cease to publish in its current form by the end of the month."

Tarvin Online was set up in 2014 after the Tarvin Parish Plan identified a gap in village-wide communications. Funded at first by The Big Lottery and supported more recently by grants from the Parish Council to cover hosting costs, the site seeks to offer at least one new article every day so that there is always a reason to click on it.

Brian says "Arnie and I, including for the first three years, joint editor Phil Miles, are NOT journalists. We have always depended on individuals and organisations sending in copy for publication. During the Covid crisis there has been very little happening, so it has been harder work to keep the site lively and relevant. As life returns to the new normal, it is important that clubs, societies and local businesses let us know their news. Do they appreciate the presence of a village website/Facebook site that allows them to reach a wider audience than their own communications methods?"

The small Committee that supports the editors thanked Arnie for all the work he has put in. They also recognise that changes to Tarvin Online may be necessary and they are open to new ideas that fresh volunteers will contribute. Tarvin Online doesn't have to remain static but without people being willing to get involved, Tarvin risks losing this essential tool for creating a lively and engaged community, together with an archive of stories and photographs of local and historical interest.

Anyone interested in getting involved and becoming an editor should call Brian on 07979 192651 or write to editor@tarvinonline.org
