Chester Local Policing Unit are advising shoppers to be vigilant following a number of purse and credit card thefts, near supermarkets, in the Chester area; including the City Centre.

Chief Inspector Paul Williams said: "The offenders are noting pin numbers when the victims make a purchase at the till and then when they are distracted take the opportunity to steal their purse and use their cards before the victim realises that their purse is missing and money has gone from their account."

"Our advice is for shoppers to keep their purses safe in their handbags and their handbags zipped and secured at all times. If you are approached by anyone wanting your assistance or attempting to distract you in any way, then be very wary of their intentions and ensure your personal belongings are secure"

High visibility Police patrols will be operating in and around these shopping areas in the run up and throughout the festive period in order to reduce criminal activity under Operation Centurion.

If you see suspicious activity at a till or in the car park; alert store security staff.

To report suspicious activity to the police, ring 101.
