Arrangements for this year's plant sale were somewhat different, because the afternoon of Thursday, 8th May coincided with the V.E. Day 80 Celebrations at Tarvin Methodist Church. The afternoon, which usually saw carloads of plants arriving in Chapel, instead saw about 80 people enjoying tea and scones (with cream & jam, or jam & cream!), while listening to – and singing along with – wartime favourite songs, led by the Tarporley Ukelele Orchestra! It was a great afternoon, and even the loss of the water supply part-way through was not enough to disrupt the festive atmosphere. Clearing up included setting up the tables, ready for the plants to arrive on Friday morning.
And arrive they did. A steady stream of kind people delivered a huge range of plants, shrubs, vegetables and general gardening items. Most had been grown or made especially for the Trust to sell, for which generosity we are exceedingly grateful. The ladies, led by Jacqui Bradley and Heather Exell, spent the day sorting out, grouping and tidying up the plants, so that they were ready for the sale on Saturday 10th May.

The day dawned fine and sunny. All the tables were carried out onto the Chapel frontage, by courtesy of the more muscular of the Trustees and, by 10am, the Chapel itself had been cleaned and turned into a coffee lounge. As always, Tarvin folk came along in their droves, and the morning was very busy. John Daines barely looked up from writing telephone numbers on raffle tickets! At the same time, the Chapel ladies were offering teas and coffees with cake or one of TMC's famous bacon baps. A really good morning was had by all!
Sales were brisk and, by midday, most of the plants were sold. The plant sales amounted to almost £1,900, with nearly £1,600 of it being in cash! The raffle raised a further £136, and we received donations amounting to £140. The overall total came to £2,174 – a record for one of our plant sales. We would like to say a sincere "thank you" to Tarvin Methodist Church, whose folk have consistently welcomed us to use their premises over the years. Grateful thanks also go to everyone who grew and raised plants for us, to all the folk who helped prepare and then to sell the plants and, especially, to the good folk of Tarvin, whose support was as good as it has ever been!
Tarvin is a good community to be a part of. Events that include the entire village, such as the Christmas Market and the Plant Sale, add to the joy of belonging to our lovely village. Thank you, Tarvin, for turning out and supporting the work to maintain your very own woodland (and bagging some cracking plants at bargain prices in the process!)
