On Friday May 8th there will be Prize Bingo in the Community Centre to raise funds for the Tarporley Memorial Hospital. The evening is being organised by the regular Thursday Bingo Group. The evening will start at about 7.00pm with "Eyes Down" being set for 7.30pm. The entrance fee is only £1 per person and is to be paid at the door.

This is not the first time that this event has been held. Two years ago the fantastic sum of £600 was raised to support the hospital, a vital, well-used and much loved part of our local health service scene. The organisers are confident that they can match or exceed this amount this time.

The Thursday Bingo Group is one of the oldest activities held at the Community Centre and has been a feature since the Community Centre was opened in 1979. Indeed, Bingo was also played in the old Parish Rooms on the High Street, so it has a long association with Tarvin's cultural history.

Today, between 50 and 60 people come to the Community Centre every Thursday and come from quite a distance. Regular players come from the Sandiway area, Chester and Tarporley as well as from the village. Though Bingo is largely regarded as a women's activity, about 15% of the regular players at Tarvin are men. Despite all the technological changes affecting entertainment in the last few years, Bingo continues to provide excitement, friendship and great fun for its many adherents – not to mention, great prizes.

Long may it continue to thrive.
