A major touring exhibition from the British Museum titled "Gladiators of Britain" is set to arrive at the Chester Grosvenor Museum this month. This exhibition, which will be available from 20 September 2025 to 25 January 2026, aims to tell the captivating story of gladiators who fought and entertained the masses in ancient Britain.
The exhibition will showcase significant objects from the period, providing insights into the history of gladiatorial combat, the lives of the fighters, and the spectacle of Roman culture. It will also explore Roman traditions in the local area, particularly focusing on Chester's own amphitheatre, the largest in Britain.
Visitors can expect to learn about the social standings of gladiators, who were often viewed as both celebrities and outcasts. The exhibition will feature 25 items from the British Museum, local museum collections, and will include activities like Gladiator School for families during the October Half Term.
