Great Support for Christmas Market Despite the conditions

I know we editors and correspondents for Tarvin online are biased and often go on and on telling you all what a wonderful village we live in and how lucky we are to call this little corner of Cheshire “Home” but this evening (Saturday 4th December 2021). I really don’t think you’d have to be biased.

Despite the torrential rain, hailstorm and biting winds there was an incredible turnout at the Tarvin Christmas Festival and Market. The high street looked so pretty with all the lights and the shop windows lit up and looking great.

There was quite a long queue for the pancakes and when I popped in for a long awaited glass of delicious hot spiced fruit punch at the Methodist Church, there were plenty of people enjoying the hospitality there too. Andy from Yolo Barbers was handing out lollies, and other shops were open and welcoming those brave souls who ventured out early in the evening. The Cafe and pubs appeared to be busy and the recently opened craft beer shop “Indie Hop” – that doesn’t just sell beer – had plenty of customers staying to sample their wares- they have Fizz and Gin too, so I’ll find my way there very soon.

The organisers of the market were worried at the start of the event, when the rain and hail were so bad that stallholders began to leave – we can’t blame them, the conditions were horrendous and their products could have been spoiled.

But many did stay, and the rain clouds finally realised the citizens of Tarvin weren’t going to give up that easily and went to pour their wrath on some other village that wasn’t having a Christmas festival!

"What impressed me most was courage and kindness of the Tarvin residents, who were absolutely determined to support the event and the stallholders. They appeared by magic as soon as the worst of the rain was over. I’ve not looked at my figures yet but I think we sold just enough jigsaws to cover our costs which is MUCH better than I expected when I arrived!! It was lovely to meet some new customers and see a couple of familiar faces so I came away happy. Particular thanks to Lyn for bringing me the best hot chocolate that I’ve ever tasted just at the moment when I was feeling cold, tired and a little bit grumpy. It made all the difference, I was so grateful."

The organisers would like us to say a huge thank you to everyone who came and all the stallholders and volunteers for supporting one of our favourite Tarvin events.
