We published an article on Tarvinonline on Tuesday that called for residents to volunteer for roles at The Lion Salt Works in Northwich.

Do you know why this site is so important?

The Lion Salt Works is an historic open-pan salt making site that is being restored and transformed into a unique heritage attraction. Located in the village of Marston, close to the town of Northwich, the site lies adjacent to the Trent and Mersey Canal and is close to the historic Anderton Boat Lift. A substantial part of the site is a Scheduled Monument.

Led by Cheshire West and Chester Council, this £8million project will see the site reborn as a fascinating destination for tourists, day visitors and families and a valued resource for local communities, businesses and heritage interest groups.

Funding has been provided by the Cheshire West and Chester Council, the Heritage Lottery Fund, and Manage+.

The Lion Salt Works Trust is the Council's principal partner in implementing the project.

Restoration work has been completed by Wates Construction, with an expected opening in April 2015.

Ed: "The chance to sign up as a volunteer is a unique opportunity for people of all ages, especially if you are interested in Industrial Archaeology or have skills that can be used by the Trust. You have until the 9th January to volunteer by sending an email to lorna.kernahan@cheshirewestandchester.gov.uk "
