At our February meeting we were privileged to have as our speaker Rob Knotts, atalented, self taught wood carver whose speciality is THE NATIVITY.He brought along some examples of his work, all carved in lime wood and in various forms. They were all beautiful pieces and works of art.
Using slides he led us through the history of various depictions of the nativity from the second century. Some were very early cave type murals and others paintings and carvings from across the world. Most moving were those found in concentration camps and prisoner of war camps.Lifesize carved nativities in wood can be found in many countries dating back centuries. The tradition and popularity of nativity scenes is still very much in evidence today.
This was a most interesting and moving evening and we thank you Rob for coming to talk to us from Saddleworth.
Rob asked that his fee be donated to the RAF Benevolent Fund and Dr. Kershaws Hospice Oldham.
Rob does not sell any of his work but exhibits and gives talks to raise money for many good causes. We wish him every success.
