In this damp and warm summer there is no doubt that grass and weeds in the public spaces have had a great growing season. The irregularity of grass-cutting has caused a number of complaints though the Parish Council recognises that the showery weather has caused some problems for CW&C's grass-cutting programme. At the moment, that aspect of the village scene is looking better.

One area that cause many complaints is the amount of grass growing in road gutters. These areas are usually sprayed to kill the growth but if the resulting debris is left it provides a great seedbed for the next generation of weeds.

The Parish Council has complained regularly about this and has encouraged residents to report the problem using the CW&C website www.cheshirewestandchester.gov.uk However, there may be a way to complain that some may find even easier.

There is an app for smart phones called SMYLE which allows you to take a photo of the offending gutter – or pothole or any other environmental problem – and send it direct to the Council. Your GPS system will pinpoint the problem accurately. A picture can convey a much better idea of the extent of the problem and should help Council staff prioritise their response in a timelier manner. (The author of this report, to whom Apps are an untapped technological resource, i.e. total mystery, has successfully downloaded SMYLE and will venture forth to look for something to report)

On a more general note, the Parish Council asks every resident to take a moment to step outside their property and just check that all is looking smart. Do the hedges need a trim? Are there weeds poking out from the base of the wall? Has a stray bit of bramble escaped onto the pavement? It is the accumulation of many small acts like this, as well as the work of CW&C and the Parish Council, that help make the village looking neat and tidy.
