The village centre was designated as a conservation area in 1973 but no changes seemed to take place at that time. Tarvin Local History group was formed in 1985 following the publication of a book Edited by the late Frank A Latham: "Tarvin. The History of a Cheshire Village". Frank had previously edited 9 village history books in the Cheshire area. The WEA class of 14 people who had written the Tarvin book wanted to continue meeting and the history group was formed. Two more books followed in 1989 and 1992. These were photographic histories of the village which can be viewed in the reference section of Tarvin Library.

In 1998 some members decided that a trail around the conservation area suitable for both visitors and locals would be both interesting and educational. The drawing of the cover design was executed by the late Dorothy Vickers an artistic member of the group from Duddon, Jenny Birkill -- Howarth did the layout and printing and the late Gill Chaplin aided by Jacky Bland and Margaret Dixon wrote the wording for the trail.

By 2010 this version was dated so the Tarvin Civic Trust joined the Local History group to revise the trail. There was a further revision in 2014 and photos were added from the Civic Trust collection. This new edition could be downloaded from computers or obtained free at the Post Office.

The trail has been used for many years as the basis for the Tarvin Village Walk which was offered at the Heritage weekends in September. Other local history groups and U3A groups have also enjoyed following it for a walk around our historic village centre.

Unfortunately neither Tarvin civic Trust nor the History group are in existence any longer so we wanted to make this useful free walk available to many people. The trail has been edited slightly to update one or two details

The 2014 edition is still available at Tarvin News Post office and the updated edition is available as a downloadable PDF. This week we are pleased to announce that Tarvin Online have also edited it as an article so that it can be followed on a mobile device.
