Having spent the last two weeks watching the joy and pride of athletes representing their countries at the Olympic Games, one can well imagine the excitement in the Twigg household in Tarvin when they learned that their 18 years old son, Chris, had been named in the Thailand Rugby League squad for the International clash with Malta in October this year.

Chris, who qualifies for Thai selection through his grandmother, has been playing rugby since he was eight years old, initially for Chester Rugby Union, but after changing to Rugby League and a spell at Warrington Wolves Academy, his now playing for Woolston Rovers. Peter Thompson, Chairman of the Thai RFL has said "we have been watching Chris for a couple of years and have been impressed with his speed, athleticism and goal kicking as winger for Woolston Rovers.

Chris said "I am looking to playing in what has been billed as the biggest rugby league game in Asian history in Chiang Mai and, along with several other Thai heritage players based in England, making a big contribution to Thailand's aspiration to climb up the rugby world rankings" The goal is for Thailand to qualify for the World Cup in five year's time."

One big difference between Chris and the UK athletes in Rio is that Chris currently does not have the sponsorship GB team enjoys and he now has to find some £2000 to fund the trip to Thailand. This is a large sum of money for an 18 year old to find and If any local business would like to help Chris kick start his international rugby career by sponsoring him, he is offering any supportive company that they will have their logo emblazoned on his kit. Anyone interested can contact Chris through Woolston Rugby Club or via his home telephone number 01829 740509

Ed: We hope that Chris will be able to realise his dream of playing in his first international rugby match and that on his return he will write us an article about his experience.
