Tarvin Community Centre

The other night, I attended the Annual General Meeting of the Tarvin Community Centre. I was the only member of the public to attend.

The Community Centre plays an important role in Tarvin. As well as being the location of the Library, it hosts a wealth of activities for all ages – from fitness classes to singing, from an art class to Table Tennis to Bingo. It hosts regular film nights and is the home of the very successful Ashton Hayes Theatre Group. It has also hosted theatre productions sponsored by Cheshire Rural Touring Arts. It is a wonderful venue for children’s parties, as many a youngster and grateful parent will confirm.

It is also exceptionally well run and financially stable. Its bottom line is healthy, and its accounts are impeccable. Over the years, it has invested income from you, the users, plus some grants, to create a Bar area, renovate the stage and update the toilets. It is run by a small but enthusiastic group of local volunteers who, together with a dedicated caretaker, keep the place available for use seven days a week.

However, while the future is secure, at this AGM some long-serving members of the Committee have indicated that, after many years of devoted service, their tenure is coming to an end. Refreshing the Committee with new members is essential if this vital part of our community structure is to continue serving. This is not so much a case of “use it or lose it” but “run it or lose it”.

Does it involve committing time? Yes.

Does it involve using skills that might have been used successfully in a job? Quite possibly.

Does it bring great satisfaction and a sense of purpose? Without a doubt.

Please do think about this and, if you are interested, contact any current committee member directly. If you want to talk to them personally, you might well find them down at the Community Centre!
