A small slice of history has found its way back to Tarvin.
Last week a very thoughtful lady from Lancashire emailed the former chairman of Tarvin Tennis Club to tell us of a fruit bowl which had come into her possession. She is a retired nurse who now deals in antiques and had acquired this E.P.N.S. fruit bowl as part of a job lot.
The reason that it is of interest is because of an inscription on it which says that it was presented to Miss Wilcockson in 1923 on the occasion of her marriage by Tarvin Ladies Tennis Club. Miss Wilcockson was the daughter of the vicar of Tarvin Church . John Hewson Wilcockson became vicar here in 1904 and died in office in 1923.
The Tarvin Ladies Tennis Club was formed in 1903 with President, Mrs Evans, Vice-president, Mrs Moreton and Mrs Shurrock did the job of treasurer and secretary. They played on 2 courts adjacent to a house numbered 25 which must be close to Bye-Pass road as our reference states that this was where they played before 1932 when that new road was constructed.
It would appear that this club ceased to exist during WW 11.
If anyone has any idea where these courts were or of Miss Wilcockson we would be delighted to hear.
