The first round matches of the 38th Village Quiz took place on Friday 11th January in the Community Centre. Each year teams battle for the honour of holding "The Eric Plenderleith Trophy", and this year 11 teams were in the running.

The evening began with an introduction from Alan Wilkinson, the current Chairman of the Community Centre, in which Alan outlined the work (which has been partially completed) that has been done at the centre over the last few weeks and months.

Alan then introduced the Question Master – Stuart MacNeil (Mac) – who it was lovely to see return after a bout of ill health kept him away from last year's event. Also in place on the stage were Timekeeper James Sinclair, and Alan himself as the scorer (ably standing in for Richard Orfanelli).

Mac began the evening outlining the rules:
There are four team members and one reserve allowed per team
Each match will consist of three rounds – 1) four general knowledge questions worth two points each to each team, 2) A quickfire round consisting of up to 12 questions in a minute with 1 point for each correct answer, 3) a further 6 general knowledge questions to each team.
In rounds 1 & 3 incorrectly answered questions can be passed across to the opposing team, with a possible 2 bonus points on offer (providing answered immediately).
At the end of the match if the scores are equal then a question will be asked to each team in turn until a wrong answer is given.
THE QUESTION MASTER'S DECISION IS FINAL!
Mac observed that this year it was very lovely to have all the questions typed out so that he didn't have to decipher handwriting!

The first round matches were as follows:
Tarvin Tennis Club 29 points -v- Tarvin Bowling Club 25 points
Tarvin Methodist Church 37 points -v- Tarvin Parish Council 17 points
The Red Lion 19 points -v- Deansway Crescent 25 points
The George Heath Foundation 31 points -v- Ashton Hayes & Tarvin Flower Club 16 points
The Nervous Tics 24 points -v- St Andrews Church 24 points (The Nervous Tics winning after sudden death)

and in a repeat of last year's final (which was won by the bowling club)
Tarvin Meeting Point 33 points -v- Tarvin Bowling Club 18 points

(The Bowling Club played the last match as the highest scoring losers as the place was vacant)

The draw for the first matches of the 2nd Round then took place and resulted in:
Deansway Crescent -v- Tarvin Tennis Club
Tarvin Methodist Church -v- The Nervous Tics
Tarvin Meeting Point -v- The George Heath Foundation

The next round matches and the final will be played next Friday (18th January) at the Community Centre – doors open at 7.00, first matches on stage at 7.30. We hope to see you there to cheer on your team!
