My dad always used to say, "If you're going to have one, have a big one!" It's a philosophy that doesn't always work well but, when it come so showing off the weight of your vegetable marrow (that's the one that was supposed to be a courgette but got forgotten), your biggest onion or your longest runner bean, size is everything! Next weekend, Saturday, 12th August 2023 will be the occasion of the Annual Gardening Show and this year, there are new classes that should make things a lot more fun. Who, for instance, can lay claim to having the wonkiest vegetable? It's not a class with its own trophy, but the bragging rights are huge!
How many of Tarvin's gardeners would be unable to put together a vase of cut flowers or of foliage – or find a single specimen rose for a vase? Lots of our gardens have lovely hydrangeas, dahlias, gladioli, sweet peas or marigolds. Gorgeous fuchsias and geraniums are everywhere. Have a look at the Show Schedule (see the entry on TarvinOnLine for 14th May 2023) and you'll see that there are lots more things you could enter. You'll find the entry form there, too – plus a sheet of handy hints about how to display your entries so that they catch the judge's eye.
The cooks and bakers have lots to go for, too. From jars of jam, marmalade and lemon curd to a loaf of bread and pieces from a tray bake (not to mention the famous Tarvin Bun loaf), there are lots of interesting classes for them to try. The children also have lots of interesting classes to have a go at. There are decorated egg shells, dinner-plate and Lego gardens, a drawing or painting of a flower or a plant, decorated digestive biscuits and their own creation of a "Veggiesaurus" for them to try their skill with – and, of course, unlike the adults, they can actually win cash prizes!
